I was readi…

I was reading Dr. Henry Louis Gates’ Faces of America.  The first person he profiled was comedian Mike Nichols, who is Jewish.  One of the things that came to mind, because Monty Python has ruined my life is Life of Brian.  What did the Romans ever do for us?  The next thing that came to mind was Malcolm X’s “We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock; Plymouth Rock landed on us.”

The DNA was traced.  Most of the Jews being expelled from Israel in 70 A.D. when the Second Temple was destroyed were brought to Italy as slaves.  When freed, they dispersed, hence the word Diaspora.  I am imagining getting into the forests of Germany.  Shades of Exodus, only going far away from the Holy Land.  “Whose bright idea was this?”

“Well we can’t go to Israel anymore, and the bloody Romans call it Palestine.”

“We could have stayed in Italy, it was sort of civilized.  Here, it’s cold, damp, and full of not very nice people.”

“Ah, but look @ the fur coats.”

“Always thinking about yourself.  We’ll never get home now.”

Then you get an ancient version of “Are we there yet?”

This was more than forty years wandering in Sinai cause Moses wouldn’t ask for directions.

So what DID the bloody Romans do for us?
