The Neanderthal Gene

Last night on PBS I watched Nova.  They reran their show about the Neanderthal and their genes.  It was called Decoding Neanderthals.

You’ve seen the pictures of Neanderthals, hulking cavemen.  You would put them on the line for a cold weather American Football team like the Cleveland Browns or Green Bay Packers.

It could be an insult.  You’re a real Neanderthal.

I remember learning in school, it was thought by the time modern humans arrived in Europe, they had died out or modern man killed them off.

Now it is thought by the end, Neanderthals were so outnumbered, they bred with the Homo Sapien arrivals in Europe.  It may have helped mankind today fight off certain diseases.

So the next time someone calls you a hulking Neanderthal, your response might be “And, your point?” 🙂
