If you’ve read the Longmire books or seen the Arts and Entertainment show about Fictional Sheriff Walt Longmire and Absoroka County, Wyoming,. (It’s actually Sheridan County, near the border with Montana and the Little Big Horn), you know the author Craig Johnson.
Chris, the manager of our local mystery bookstore Clues Unlimited at the corner of Fort Lowell and Country Club in Tucson got him to come by to promote his new book, (he will be back in March for the Tucson Festival of Books).
He is tall and powerfully built every inch his character Walt Longmire, right down to the cowboy hat and the fact that he’s a rancher.
He spoke for about 45 minutes, then took questions. He talked about filming in New Mexico, how former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson was forward thinking in laying the groundwork for a New Mexico film industry. Filming is done February through July, which would be hard to do in Wyoming. Something called blizzards tends to get in the way.
His wife was with him, and her hint to take questions was telling him the Denver Broncos were losing. He asked if it was time to take questions.
He talked about the newspaper clippings he uses to get his stories and talking to local Sheriffs about how they may not get backup immediately, so a sheriff or his deputies have to be able to handle a situation by themselves.
Craig Johnson is funny, self-deprecating and it was fun to listen to him talk about writing and building things on his ranch. It made his series come to life even more. Thank you Chris for having him.
