I’m not counting 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing in this, only because, I’m connected to both places. How often though, do we see a terrible story, such as the stabbings in the high school in Murrysville, Pennsylvania and think, “How horrible,” but then move on to the next story, such as Malaysian Airlines Flight 370?
Well in this case for me, there is a connection. My friend Lindy Comstock, Linguist at UCLA attended that high school and is from there. While she doesn’t live there anymore and isn’t attending high school, it is a part of her world. Because she’s my friend it’s personal.
Our modern social media networks have made these connections a possibility. The Six Degrees of Separation becomes even more possible.
